Who we are:
Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare.
Together with our research partner, the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, we form the UK’s only academic Biomedical Research Centre specialising in paediatrics.
Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses.
Our role in the NHS:
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) is part of the NHS.
We provide a range of specialist paediatric services to local, national and international patients. Around half of our patients come from outside of London.
GOSH is referred to as a tertiary hospital. This means that we largely provide third-level specialist care. Primary care generally consists of frontline services such as GPs and dentists, while secondary care is offered by local hospitals.

As a specialist, tertiary care hospital, our referrals originate from another healthcare organisation, such as a local hospital.
GOSH provides a number of services to children throughout the UK through the National Commissioning Group (NCG).
Because of the highly specialist nature of these services they are only provided by a few hospitals in the country.
For some services we are the only centre in the UK to that is able to provide the service.
What we do:
Great Ormond Street Hospital receives more than 268,000 patient visits every year.
Most of the children we care for are referred from other hospitals throughout the UK and overseas.
There are 58 different clinical specialties at GOSH; the UK's widest range of specialist health services for children on one site.
More than half of our patients come from outside London and GOSH is the largest paediatric centre in the UK for:
- paediatric intensive care
- cardiac surgery - we are one of the largest heart transplant centres for children in the world
- neurosurgery - we carry out about 60 per cent of all UK operations for children with epilepsy
- paediatric cancer services including bone marrow transplants – with University College London Hospitals (UCLH), we are one of the largest centres in Europe for children with cancer
- nephrology and renal transplants
- children treated from overseas in our International and Private Patient (IPP) wing

Accessibility
- Russell Square and Holborn stations are not easy for wheelchair users, as there are steps from the platforms. If you require step-free travel, it is best to use the bus or walk.
- Low-floor, wheelchair accessible buses run on all routes.
- Assistance at mainline stations is available for disabled passengers travelling on trains. It is best to give at least 24 hours’ notice so that they can make arrangements.

Tube: Holborn, Kings Cross, Rusel Square,
Two tube stations are a short walk from the hospital. Russell Square is the nearest (7 minutes walk) and is on the Piccadilly Line, with connections to Kings Cross Station. Holborn (7 minutes walk) is on the Piccadilly line and Central line, with connections to Kings Cross and Liverpool Street stations.
Cycling: There are cycle racks on Queen Square, Great Ormond Street and Guilford Street. You can hire bikes in London from as little as £2 per journey, using Santander Cycles
Taxis and minicabs:
You can help reduce air pollution around the hospital by travelling in a hybrid or electric vehicle minicab (it is the same price as a normal taxi). You can book one by calling these companies:

Non-emergency medical transport
- We provide non-emergency medical transport where any other method of getting to and from GOSH would be damaging to the patient’s health.
- Please ask your family doctor (GP) to arrange transport to GOSH if your child requires it to attend an outpatient appointment. If your child is coming for an inpatient stay, our staff will organise this. We cannot accept bookings from anyone else.

Appointments and referrals
All appointments must be made via a referral from a local hospital, community paediatrician, or in some circumstances a GP.
