Who are we? 

Educational Psychologists (also called EPs or Ed Psychs) have professional qualifications in psychology and educational psychology – the study of how children develop, learn and behave.

What do we do?

Educational Psychologists work collaboratively with school staff, parents and children themselves to help ensure that young people with additional educational needs who are having difficulties at school receive the right sort of help.

Each of the maintained schools in Hackney has an allocated Educational Psychologists or EP who visits regularly to help with strategic planning.

Many of Hackney’s maintained schools also buy in additional EP time. How this is used is often agreed during termly multi-agency planning meetings.

What are Parent Advice Sessions? 

The Parent Advice Sessions are run independently of the Educational Psychology Service work in schools. They are open to:

  • all children and families living in Hackney including those children not yet in school
  • children who are out of school
  • children who live in Hackney and attend school in other boroughs

What happens during the session? 

This is an opportunity for parents and carers to have a discussion about concerns that they may have about their children or young person. 

If you would like support and advice, we are offering an opportunity for you to talk about your child/children with an educational psychologist for up to 30 minutes on our phone line. This service runs on Wednesdays between 1:00 and 3:00 pm and during term time.

We can help by talking through your concerns about your child, their development, any special educational needs that you may be aware of or any concerns you may have about their home or school experience.

We can give you advice about:

  • behaviour at home or school
  • learning at home or school
  • your child’s special educational needs
  • anxiety, well-being and mental health

How can I book a session? 

We currently offer 2 methods of contacting us to book a slot to speak to an Educational Psychologist.  

Option 1 - An internet enquiry

Leave your contact details through this Educational Psychology Parent Advice Service Google Form and an Educational Psychologist will call you back during the next Parent Advice time slot. These are 30 minute slots on Wednesdays from 1-3pm during school term time.

Option 2 - A phone enquiry

Call the EPS directly during term time on Wednesdays between 1:00 and 3:00. The EP on duty will either answer your call immediately, or if they are already on a call, please leave a message and they will call you back. 

What information is needed when booking a 1:1 advice session?

When leaving messages either on the Google Form or through voicemail, please provide:

  • the details of your name
  • date of your enquiry
  • your child's name and school
  • your contact number
  • a brief summary of your concern or questions

What to do if you have a complaint

How you feel about having used or experienced a service is important. Services often ask for feedback to help them understand how to make sure people they work with have a good experience.

If you have feedback about this service you can talk to the person who worked with you or, if you feel more comfortable, a service manager. They will try to help sort out any problems.

If you are still not happy with the service you can raise your concerns formally. This means someone who is not part of the service will look at your feedback or concern and see if anything can or needs to be done to help make things better.

If you need to make a formal complaint you can use the London Borough of Hackney complaints procedure.
