Young Hackney School and Youth Sports Unit (YHSU)

Service details

Who are we?

The Young Hackney Youth and School Sports Unit (YHSU) was created to embed the legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, widening participation by all children and young people in sports.

What do we do?

We support all young people in Hackney by encouraging them to have a healthy and active lifestyle and by providing them with opportunities, programmes and regular group sessions in schools and community settings.

The Sports Ambassadors Project

We offer young people aged 14 and over, opportunities to help shape and deliver sports provision in Hackney. Opportunities may include work placements and experience in sports leadership through a Sports Ambassadors project.

This can be a stepping-stone to further coaching, volunteering or leadership opportunities through links with sports clubs, leisure facilities and community providers.

Contact the service to find out more about the Sports Ambassador project.

What opportunities do you offer for children and young people with additional needs and disabilities?

Session and programmes in schools

We support Physical Education in schools and run youth activity projects for those with SEND. We run a number of school competitions for young people who have additional needs and or disabilities, including Panathlon, a competition where pupils get the opportunity to try new sports and compete against each other. The winner of the Hackney competition then goes on to represent Hackney at the London regional finals.

Work in specialist schools

We also support special schools by delivering specialist coaching programmes, leadership qualifications and offer young people the opportunity to participate in work experience with the unit.

Inspire targeted SEND sessions

Our targeted SEND Youth offer is called 'Inspire.' Our Young Hackney - Inspire Juniors and Seniors sessions are for young people who:

  • Are aged 8 - 24 years old (until the day before they turn 25)
  • Have SEND or support needs such as; Learning Disabilities, autistic spectrum condition including Aspergers, Speech and Language Difficulties or Physical Disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy.

Young Hackney's Inspire Sessions

We deliver several Inspire sessions a week from appropriate venues across Hackney. These sessions are child and young person led, with a focus on developing social and communication skills, having fun and enjoying being physically active in the company of other young people.

The Young Hackney's Inspire Sessions are provided for two different age groups, one for a younger age group (juniors aged 8-14) and one for older young people (seniors aged 14-24).

The activity sessions run throughout the year, in term time and there are often Inspire session arranged during school holidays.

Young Hackney Sports Unit also works with other services to provide opportunities for young people with SEND including Young Hackney Inclusion Night on Mondays in collaboration with support from Hackney Ark's Targeted Health Outreach team

If you have feedback about this service please contact them directly. They will use your feedback to do more of what works well and less of anything that doesn't work well.
