Who are we? 

The Harington Scheme aims to provide young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities with life skills and vocational training that will enable them to participate more fully in living and working in the community.


What do we do? 

We offer a range of training programmes and opportunities that aim to help young people develop employment skills and self-confidence. 

We can apply for funding for personalised support, such as a support worker or signer.If you are likely to need this please let us know when you apply.

Support while you are on one of our programmes

At the beginning of our programmes we will get to know you and find out what support you need. We can provide different support that may include:

  • Small group sizes
  • A key worker
  • Counselling
  • Job Coaching
  • Travel training
  • Regular reviews
  • Literacy and numeracy support
  • Advice and guidance
  • Personalised support (subject to funding availability)

Progression

The majority of learners are supported to find a job or further training opportunities when they leave us. The Scheme supports them and liaises with employers for as long as needed to support their transition. 

When young people are ready to move on, they will get support from the Progression Team to find a job or further training. The Progression Team will also provide aftercare when you have left Harington for at least 3 months.

Vocational Training Scheme

This is for people aged 16 to 24 years of age who are ready to explore working in a retail environment with support. 

The Vocational Training Scheme project aims to:

  • Prepare people for work,
  • Find them employment and
  • Support them in their new jobs

Harington Gardeners

Harington Gardeners is a subsidiary arm of Harington. Its Assistant Gardeners, who are usually former trainees, are offered paid employment with our garden maintenance company and the chance to develop their gardening skills.

Horticultural Training and Day Service

Harington's Day service provision offers horticultural activity of a therapeutic nature to adults with a learning disability or mental health support needs. 

This horticultural programme is designed to cater to people with a wide variety of interests, goals, and support needs. The site offers a variety of outdoor environments in which to learn horticulture including a formal garden, vegetable plots, and a conservation area. Harrington offers two horticultural programmes. 

Programme One: Skills Pathway – Horticulture

  • Aimed at young people aged 16-24, this is a holistic programme that develops learners' gardening skills as well as life-skills and transferable skills vital for successful employment. 

Programme Two: Day Service

  • The Day Service provision offers horticultural training of a more therapeutic nature to adults with a learning disability or mental health support needs. It is a flexible programme dependent on individual needs and includes basic skills support.

Skills Pathway for Employability

Harrington's Foundation Skills provision helps young people develop key skills needed for:

  • Employment
  • Self-direction and
  • Personal development

Nearest Tube: Archway

Directions from Archway

Get a bus (143,210,271) to Highgate Village (3rd stop from Archway) or walk up Highgate Hill to the third set of traffic lights.

Cross Highgate High Street at the traffic lights and walk down hill past the lamp post and take the first left into Cholmeley Park.

Look for a turning on the left that says Private Road (next to Furnival House) and follow this driveway round to the left.

OR

Directions from Highgate Station (Archway Road)

Cross over and then walk down Archway Road (down hill), past the main junction by Jackson’s Lane and Cholmeley Park is the next right.

Walk up Cholmeley Park, past the mini roundabout, up the hill and take the second right down the private road at the side of Furnival House (opposite 55a).

Transport/fares to enable work experience can be funded by us, but transport from home to Harington should be arranged by parents/carers or through your Local Authority.

Who is eligible?

You need to be aged 16 – 18, or up to 24 years if you had extra help because of your learning difficulties/disability at school. You should be looking for a course at level one or below, and not yet ready to access level two courses.
