Engage Hackney - Floating and housing support

Service details

Who we are…

Engage Hackney is a Floating Support service for people in specific groups with specific needs who require additional housing related support to live more independently.

What we do…

The Service supports people aged 18 years or older, who live in the London Borough of Hackney and those placed outside the London Borough of Hackney (LBH) in temporary accommodation, who have housing related support needs.

Check which groups are eligible for support from this service.

People with assessed support needs living in the following situations will be able to access support from Engage Hackney:

  • Private rented accommodation
  • Bed and Breakfast Accommodation
  • Accommodation let by a registered social landlord under any form of tenancy agreement
  • Owner occupation
  • Other forms of accommodation, such as mobile homes etc.
  • Rough sleepers
  • Temporary housing (hostels)

People temporarily admitted to hospital who have low level housing related support needs will be able to access this service to support them to maintain their tenancy / accommodation during their hospital stay and to help support the hospital discharge process.

How does the service work?

Community Navigators and Assistants will provide individualised packages of support which may be; 1:1 support in person, by phone, by Skype, drop-in support and advice sessions and community surgeries.

Clients will be encouraged to build links with services, community groups and friends/families that will enable them to develop and maintain independence.

The service aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness by supporting people to engage in local groups and activities and integrate with their local communities by supporting volunteering, befriending and peer support.

Community Surgeries will be delivered from accessible locations across Hackney, with a particular focus on community and faith group premises, libraries, and charity premises.

Call the service for details of surgeries near you.

What will the service do to support clients?

We support clients to:

  • Engage effectively in Education, Employment and Training activities e.g. CV development and job searches
  • Navigate Universal Credit roll-out and welfare benefits
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Link-in with employment or volunteering opportunities within Riverside e.g. peer mentoring/GROW and externally through local partners.

The support offered will depend on the service the client is receiving, e.g. those accessing the Crisis Intervention element will focus on immediate priority needs for example preventing eviction.

Clients receiving pre-tenancy support will focus on independent living, budgeting and tenancy sustainment activity.  Within our service offer, clients are able to choose from a range of support activities, delivered in 1:1 and group settings, supported by peer mentoring and a range of volunteer-led social, physical and or leisure activities.
