If your child has SEND
Nurseries and playgroups must help all children who go to their settings, including those with special needs.
They do this by:
-
Having a SEND Policy. This explains how they help children with additional needs. You can find it on their website or ask staff for a copy.
-
Specialist Support: A team member called a SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) has training and experience to help children with special needs. They will work with you as the child's parent and if needed, other specialist services.
-
Staff Training makes sure staff know how to identify and help children with different needs.
-
Working with Health Visitors to review development, progress, and identify needs e.g. 27th Month Review.
-
Connecting with Children's Centres to get Early Help or MAT (Multi Agency Team) support if needed.
-
Help with Transitions from the Area SENCo when children with SEND move on to reception class or primary school,
-
How to access support from education and health specialist services. Your permission is needed before they can be involved.
Extra support funding for children with additional needs
To get extra help for children with special needs settings will know about:
-
Disability Access Fund (DAF). When and how to apply for this funding for eligible children.
-
Early Years Inclusion Funding. When it may be appropriate to apply for this funding for children with new or emerging needs.
-
Education, Health, and Care Assessment (EHCNA). When to request an EHCNA. If a child with SEND needs more support that can be provided through the above an EHCNA may identify they need an Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plan funded from the high needs funding block. EHC Plans are reviewed every six months for children in early years settings.
Staff in settings are there to support all children, including those with special needs. If you have questions, please ask to speak with the settings SENCo.

- What to do if you have a complaint
Our intention is to work in partnership with parents and the community generally and we welcome suggestions on how to improve our Nursery at any time and will give prompt and serious attention to any concerns that you may have by following our complaints procedure in the four stages.
Stage 1 If any parent/carer should have cause for complaint or any queries regarding the care or learning provided by the Nursery they should in the first instance take it up with the child Key Person.
Stage 2 If the issue remains unresolved or parents/carers feel they have received an unsatisfactory outcome, then these concerns must be presented in writing to the Nursery Manager or book an appointment to speak to the Manger. The Manager/Deputy Manager will always be at hand to deal with any complaints raised. The Manager will then investigate the complaint and report back to the parent/carer within three working days. This will be fully documented in the complaints log book and will detail the nature of the complaint and any actions arising from it. Most complaints will be resolved informally at stage 1 or 2. However, if the issue still persists, the parent/carer should follow the following stages:
Stage 3 If the matter is still not resolved, a formal meeting should be held between the Manager, parent/carer and the Deputy Manager to ensure that it is dealt with comprehensively. A record of the meeting will be made along with documented actions. All parties present at the meeting will review the accuracy of the record, sign to agree and receive a copy, which will signify the conclusion of the procedure.
Stage 4 If the matter cannot be resolved to their satisfaction, then parents have the right to raise the matter with Ofsted. Tel No: 084564040 or write to: Complaints Department,The National Business Unit, Ofsted, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD
