Prospects - Careers Services
Service details
Who are we?
Prospects are an established careers advice service and part of the Shaw Trust employment services. Prospects Careers Service and Advice Plus offer impartial information, advice, and career guidance for young people who live in Hackney.
Prospects have links to and strong relationships with training providers and specialist employment agencies, locally and more widely out of the borough.
What do we do?
The service provides information, advice, and career guidance at main transition points in the lives of young people for example:
- when choosing Year 9 options
- when moving from Year 11 to Post 16 education, training, and employment
- when leaving Post 16 education for higher education or employment
Services are delivered through a range of options including:
- Careers advice for school pupils and students
- Careers advice for pupils with special educational needs and or disabilities (SEND)
- Prospects regular drop-in career advice sessions for young people
- Prospects advice and guidance for unemployed young people
Careers advice for school pupils and students
All schools are required to provide career advice. You can find out more about what schools must offer in the Statutory guidance for governing bodies, school leaders, and school staff (January 2018). Ask your young person’s school who provides this statutory advice if Prospects is not the provider.
Parents, carers, and young people can request advice from Prospects Careers Service directly. They can attend a drop-in session or call the service to discuss individual requirements.
Careers advice for pupils with special educational needs and or disabilities (SEND)
Since September 2014, Prospects has contributed professional career advice for Education Heath and Care needs assessments, this will include recommendations for education and training provision and progression opportunities and options.
The service can support young people who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) from Year 9 when young people are aged 14 up until their 25th birthday.
Young people with SEND may have a request made for career advice by their EHC Plan Coordinator.
This does not replace the duty on schools to continue to secure and provide advice for all pupils including those with SEND.
Prospects drop-in advice sessions for young people
Prospects offer career advice sessions in various local venues including:
- Mainstream schools
- Special schools
- Colleges
- Next Steps Drop-In Careers Advice sessions delivered by Prospects
Services for unemployed young people
Prospects provide information advice and guidance to young people aged 16 (up to 25 for those with SEND) and older who are unemployed and looking for education, training, or employment opportunities.
If you would like support from the service attend a drop-in session or call to discuss your individual needs.
