Young Hackney - Young Carers Project

Service details

Who are we?

Young carers across the UK are supported to better cope with their caring role through specialised services that recognise the hard work that goes into being a Young Carer. Young Hackney - Young Carers is the local service that provides this support is. We are committed to supporting Young Carers on this journey and also helping and supporting them to enjoy their own childhood.

What do we understand about your situation?

Young carers can have serious caring roles and responsibilities for daily tasks over and beyond those of other people their age. At home they may be helping with:

  • Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.
  • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.
  • Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed.
  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress.
  • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.
  • Helping to give medicine.
  • Helping someone communicate.
  • Looking after brothers and sisters more often.

They often live with added pressure related to still being in school and education. They may experience a lack of understanding about the impact of the extra caring responsibilities on them from their schoolmates.

How can we help support you?

The Young Hackney - Young Carers Project provides access to recreational respite (breaks from caring) through specific activities, clubs, outings, holidays and one-to-one support.

We recognise that all caring experiences are different so we work together with you to create a personalised plan for you and your family. Your plan could include:

  • Opportunities to take part in fun, free activities and trips. especially for you and other Young Carers - activities are agreed and planned with our Young Carers.
  • Identifying and providing spaces for you to meet and connect with other Young Carers.
  • Extra or one to one support with a Young Hackney worker to provide advice, guidance and support.
  • Information about support groups run in school to help you get the most out of your education.
  • Advocacy and support to understand your rights as a Young Carer

The service can also offer emotional and practical support for young carers if this is identified as necessary.

The Young Adult Carers (YACs) forum

The Young Adult Carers forum aims to start the transition pathway for young carers.

The forum brings together young adult carers aged 15 - 25. It provides them with a space to meet other YACs and share practical, emotional and social support.

The group also uses social media such as a WhatsApp group to share opportunities and suggestions with those involved in the forum.

Young Adult Carers are entitled to a transition assessment which involves a discussion and creating a plan for continued support within the Adult Carers Service post-18.

Notes

Young Carers have the same rights as older carers. They can also be considered 'children in need' under the Children's Act 1989. This may depend on the view of the local authority and whether they consider the child's caring role is preventing them from achieving or maintaining:

  • a reasonable standard of social opportunities
  • full school attendance

This consideration is intended to help draw in extra support if it is needed.
