Description

Coronavirus - care and support team update

We are aware Coronavirus may be affecting the ability of carers to support their disabled child. We understand that this may place a strain on family resources. We are working closely with our care providers to confirm their contingency plans and alternative arrangements.

We are also aware that families who use Direct Payments might not be able to pay their regular worker due to isolation, illness or a Covid related restriction. We aim to offer families flexibility during this time and will work with them, case by case, to meet their individual child's needs.

Disabled Children's Service social workers are making welfare checks with our families and other services such as schools who may be involved or need to be involved in providing support.

If you need support to use your Direct Payments or have queries or concerns about support being provided by care agencies contact your social worker by phone or email.

If this is not possible contact the team by phone on 020 8356 6789 so we can agree a way forward.

Who are we?

Hackney's Disabled Children’s Service provide social care support for families who have disabled children.

How can we help you?

Advice and Information

Families and professionals who need a short discussion or advice can call the duty line (0208 356 6789) to speak to a social worker in the team. This is for advice and not a referral.

Referrals must be made through FAST (First Access and Screening Team).

Child and Family Needs Assessment

The Disabled Children’s Service undertake Child and Family Needs Assessment (also known as a section 17 assessment under the Children's Act) to see what support the family needs. These assessment may include a Carers Assessment.

Assessments may identify that a support package in the form of Direct Payments, or through an approved care agency would help the family. Interim support can be provided during the assessment if needed.

After the assessment families can receive:

  • Help with personal care and social activities
  • Help from the Short Breaks Service

Carer’s Assessments

There is a legal duty on local authorities to assess any carer who requests a "Carer’s Assessment" or who appears to need support.
Parents of a disabled child can request a "Carer’s Assessment" whether or not their child has a care package.

If you are a carer and you need some support, the council can give you more information and advice on how the assessment process works.

The assessment will look at the impact the care and support you provide is having on your own wellbeing, and other important aspects of your life.

What to do if you have a complaint

How you feel about having used a service is important. Services often ask for feedback to help them understand how to make sure people they work with have a good experience.

If you have feedback about this service, something you liked or were not happy with, you can talk to the person who worked with you or, if you feel more comfortable, a service manager. They will try to help sort out any problems.

If you are still not happy with the service you can raise your concerns formally. This means someone who is not part of the service will look at your feedback or concern and see if anything can or needs to be done to help make things better.

If you need to make a formal complaint you can use the London Borough of Hackney complaints procedure.

Can parents & young people buy this service as part of their SEND personal budget?

Yes

SEND Personal Budget - Notes

Where a Child and Family Needs Assessment identifies the family are eligible for a care package, this may be taken as a direct payment style personal budget.
