How do we work?
Support for children who need some support
Speech and Language Therapists work with Early Years settings, nurseries, academies, schools and colleges to support speech, language and communication for children and young people with identified needs. We work with settings to improve the communication environment and support children and young people to access and get the most out of the setting they are in.
Support for children who need specific support
Speech and Language Therapists from the service start by assessing a child and young person. This is usually an interview with the parent or carer, followed by observation and direct work with the child or young person.
Identification and support for children aged 0-5 years
The service runs monthly assessment sessions called Talking walk-in. These are held at Children's Centres all over Hackney. If you are worried about your child’s communication you can contact the team and they will book you in for one of these assessment sessions. Practitioners and professionals can also make referrals for parents to attend Talking Walk In assessment session with their child.
Therapists may follow up with:
- Direct assessment and intervention work with individual children.
- Regular reviews of children to make sure that they are continuing to do well and that the programme is updated and continues to provide what is needed.
The service also offers Beginner Makaton workshops for parents and carers and services working to support young children.
Identification and support for school aged children and young people
Mainstream primary and secondary schools in Hackney have link Speech and Language Therapists assigned to them. If you have concerns about your school aged child you can ask your teacher, school SENCo or GP to contact us.
Other Speech and Language Therapy support
We offer advice and training to families and teaching staff. This might be about adults changing how they support a child or doing some special and specific activities.
We can help develop targets so that everyone is working towards the same goals for individual children.
We set up and run group work targeting specific areas of language and communication development. Group work helps as children and young people already do much of their school learning in groups.
The Speech and Language Therapist may train others staff members to run group work.
Hackney Speech and Language Therapy service has it's own website which offers expert advice and specific resources including short instruction videos about specif ways you can help your child. View the Get Hackney Talking website here.
