Who are we?
The Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Community Service is a multidisciplinary team providing specialist services to people living in Hackney and The City of London.
Services include:
- advice and support to individuals with or at risk of having Sickle Cell Thalassaemia or other major haemoglobinopathies (red blood cell disorders)
- testing
- advice and support to parents/carers
- counselling
What do we do?
The service acts as a source of expertise and advice to health care professionals locally and nationally in relation to Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia. We provide training, education and awareness programmes about Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia and other related red blood cell disorders. Other activities carried out at the centre and in the community include:
- genetic counselling
- blood testing
- advice on health and social issues
- individual and group support
- welfare and benefits advice

You do not need a referral to contact the service for information or advice.
Referrals can be made for services by:
- family, carers or self referral
- voluntary/statutory organisations
- secondary and primary care services
- What to do if you have a complaint
If you have a concern about the care you or a relative or friend is receiving you should talk to the person in charge of your care or the manager of the department.
If you prefer to discuss your concern with someone independent of your care team then you can contact our Patient Liaison and Advice Service (PALS).
The PALS team can help resolve queries and concerns quickly and if you are not happy with the outcome then they can advise you on our formal complaints process.
