Independent Support Programme - September 2014 - July 2018

Service details

Independent Support update:

In 2014 as part of the SEND reforms, the government launched a national Independent Support programme to support parents and carers in the transfer of their children’s Statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN) to the new Education, Health and Care plans (EHCP).

In Hackney this has been delivered by the charity KIDS: www.kids.org.uk

and

Hackney SENDIAGS (SEND Information, Advice and Guidance Service)

Independent Support was a time limited programme initially planned to run for two years, but with extensions it ran for four years whilst all statements of SEND were transferred to EHCPs.

The programme will now finish on 31 July 2018 and as a result, the KIDS Independent Support offer in Hackney will end on this date

Information for parents and young people

The Council for Disabled Children made some usefull factsheets based around relevant aspects of the reforms.

We have added them to this entry so that parents/carers and young people can download or refer to them if they would find this helpful.

The Department for Education and the Council for Disabled Children have produced these short films to help explain SEND processes to parents and young people.

A great service

Tell other parents what you liked

I found the Independent Supporters very helpful.

They were calm and knowledgeable and did everything and more to support and help me through a process I found anxiety provoking, stressful and confusing.

What wasn't so good?
