Adult Autism Service (City and Hackney)

Service details

Who are we?

The City and Hackney Adult Autism Service is a National Health Service (NHS) that offers diagnosis, brief interventions, and advice to adults living in City and Hackney who have not had a previous diagnosis of Autism.

What do we do?

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition, which means that it will affect people in different ways and is therefore referred to as an Autistic Spectrum.

The three main areas of difficulty people with Autism can experience include difficulty with:

  • Social communication and understanding what people think and feel.
  • Social interaction.
  • Rigidity and repetitive behaviors and coping with change and unpredictability.

What are the benefits of getting a diagnosis?

Being assessed helps clarify why you respond and communicate in the way that you do. An assessment can confirm whether you have Autism or not. Either way, this knowledge can aid you in accessing services and support that can help and support you.

If you are diagnosed with Autism, it can enable you to:

  • Gain an understanding of yourself, learning about your condition and how to cope.
  • Access services that suit your needs.
  • Access certain benefits: such as PIP (Personal Independence Payments). Students could be eligible to claim DCS (Disabled Students Allowance).
  • Get help at work: employers have a responsibility to make “reasonable adjustments” to your work environment

You could also be eligible for a community care assessment under The Care Act 2014 to access care and support.

  • A monthly online Peer Support group, where you can meet and share experiences with other newly diagnosed people.
  • A series of 7 online Post-Diagnostic workshops, covering a series of topics related to Autism e.g. Employment, Relationships, Mental Health
  • A one-off Reasonable Adjustment appointment with our Occupational Therapist to discuss adjustments for your place of work or study.
