Autism Family Practitioner
Service details
Who is the Autism Family Practitioner?
The Autism Practitioner, Robert Raby, is a specialist support worker who works with families who have children and young people who are autistic or neurodiverse.
The Autism Family Practitioner works with families with children who have a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum condition or ASC for short.
This includes children and young people with social communication difficulties.
What do they do?
Robert can come and help you in your home when things are difficult to identify helpful strategies and approaches or introduce you to services that may be helpful.
He may also be able to attend some meetings with other services to help you with discussions about support or difficulties your child or young person may be having related to the impact of their diagnosis.
The amount of time or sessions and nature of the help and intervention will be individually discussed and will be agreed with families and young people directly when contact is first made.
Breathing Space parent carer online group sessions
Have you been given a diagnosis of an Autistic Spectrum Condition for your child or young person in the last 12 months?
Do you need support or advice?
We would like to offer you the space and opportunity to access this support, in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
The group is made up of myself; an Autism Specialist, and the expertise of parents with lived experiences of the condition.
In the group, you will have the opportunity to share and discuss any difficulties you may
be experiencing, or ask any questions you may have.
When do these sessions run?
The group runs in the evenings on the following days for the 2 different age groups.
- Thursdays 6:30 pm to 8 pm for children aged 5-10
- Fridays 6:30 pm to 8 pm for children aged 11-19

Is there a waiting list for 1:1 help, advice, and support from the Autism Family Practitioner?
There is currently a high demand for this service and there may be a waiting time if you need one-to-one support.
To help families access the support the Autism Practitioner can offer, Robert also runs parent information group sessions in schools and online parent support sessions.
Please ask your child's school if the group sessions are something they offer parents and carers in their setting.
Can anyone else help if I have to wait for this service but need help now?
Yes. Hackney also has specialist services available for children and young people who are autistic and for their families. These services offer training and support in school, drop-in parent-carer information sessions, a Family Coach SEND service, enhanced support to access youth clubs, sibling clubs, one-to-one advice sessions for young people over 16 years of age, and more.

- What to do if you have a complaint
Services often ask you for feedback about your experience. This is to help them understand how to make sure people they work with have a good experience, do more of what works and change things that don't work well.
If you want to provide feedback about the service you received you can talk to the person who worked with you or, if you feel more comfortable, a SEND service manager. They will try to help sort out any problems.
If you are still not happy with the service you can raise your concerns formally. This means someone who is not part of the service will look at your feedback or concern and see if anything can or needs to be done to help make things better.
If you need to make a formal complaint you can use the London Borough of Hackney complaints procedure.
