The University of the Third Age is an educational self-help co-operative for people no longer in full-time employment who consider that 'learning is for life'.

Activities provide opportunities for people to meet others and learn from each other.

Check before going as a session may be cancelled.

Activities include:


Art for the beginner or more experienced artist. Members can use pencil, ink or water-colour. They should bring their own materials. Homerton Library, Homerton High Street, E9 6AS

Badminton Group:

Badminton for all ability levels.

Thursday 2pm-4pm. Queensbridge Leisure Centre, Holly Street, E8 3XW

2 courts a week £10.00 apprx - shared between the members

Take racket (if possible), and appropriate footwear.


3 Bridge groups playing, an high-flying group, an intermediate level and a beginners.

New members are accommodated when possible or put on the waiting list until a new group can be formed.

Groups meet in members' homes.


Hackney Picture House, Mare Street 12.30pm in the ground floor cafe to allow time to buy over 60s concessionary tickets and get a drink.

There is normally an introductory lecture and post film discussion led by a film expert.

Creative writing:

Monday 11am – 12noon Stamford Hill Library

Similar to human rights, subject matter suggested to write about and read out what is written.

Current Affairs:

Meets every 2nd & 4th Tuesday of the month. 10.15am – 12.15pm.

St Joseph’s Hospice, Mare Street, Hackney, E8 4SA

Discussions are about different subjects, e.g. EU Referendum, Violence against Women this Century and Benefit Cuts/NHS.

The session starts with general exercise, then flinging Scarves around to music.

This session has been popular for many years.

Dancers should bring light floating scarves and two fans with them.

Drama for all:

Working on different plays.


Exploring London:

Monthly visits to places of interest in London.

French film and conversation:

Informal group aiming to practise French conversation centring on a French film (with English subtitles!).

This group is run from home with spaces for 10 members. Call to see if there are spaces available.

Human Rights:

Monday 10am – 11am Stamford Hill Library

Any subject to discuss, mostly on current issues.

International Folk Dance:

1st Wednesday of the month 10.30 – 12noon

Stamford Hill Library

No experience required: Circle dances, longways dances, square dances, international dances. Take part or watch. Refreshments provided if you are early.

Italian Film:

Fortnightly on Wednesday 2.30pm at group leader home.

The Group watches Italian Films with Italian subtitles.

Fluency in Italian is not necessary

Music Appreciation:

A sort-of-classical mixture. Mixture of moods and styles.

Opera Appreciation:

10am -  10.30am (see NOTE below) on 2nd (or 3rd) Thursday of the month and finishes with time allowed for a discussion and lunch afterwards (the restaurant closes at 2pm). Salvation Army, 70 Mare Street, E8

Watch opera in a single sitting but occasionally for longer performances this would be over two sittings (subsequent month).

Outdoor sketching:

1st & 3rd Thursday in the month 11am

Various places and usually outdoors but rearranged indoors if the weather demands


2.30pm on the first & third Friday of the month. Clapton Library meeting room on 1st  floor (lift available)

The group explores some of Philosophy’s big ideas and issues and questions how we and others arrive at the truth but only in a relaxed manner.


Monday (2nd Monday each month 1.30pm) 2pm - 3.10pm

Pilates includes standing, sitting and lying postures. So members need to bring a yoga mat (or if unsure whether this is the class for you, a blanket) and also a yoga block (or a book about 1" thick )

Ancient Chinese exercise system which focuses on the release and flow of energy within the body, using gentle repeated movements to help become more aware of our bodies and clear our minds. Found in many classical cultures, the Chinese tradition is based on a concept of Qi - meaning 'natural energy' - leading to its long recognised health benefits.

With practice, the exercises can improve vitality and strength. Most routines are done standing but if necessary practitioners can sit.

Reading and Discussing Books:

4th Tuesday of the month 2pm - 4pm

Books selected by group members then share your opinions of the month's read at the next meeting.


First Tuesday of every month 2pm – 4pm

Have you ever wondered about Life, the Universe and Everything?

Cloning and Genetic Modification, Black Holes, Global warming…

No previous knowledge needed.


4th Friday of the month 2pm - 4pm Clapton Library.

Sit and Stitch:

2nd Wednesday of each month between 10.30 am – 1pm

Clissold House in Clissold Park.

For anyone who enjoys craft work. Experienced, beginner or highly skilled.

Spoken German:

Tuesday afternoon fortnightly, at a home in Clapton. The number of participants is limited to six so that everyone has sufficient time to speak.

You should have some background knowledge, so participants can read and discuss bits of literature, apart from everyday German.

Table Tennis:

2nd  & 4th  Wednesdays of the month 11am

Enjoy the social, physical and hand eye co-ordination exercise that this game can afford.

This is probably the best way to learn when the leisure centre space has been booked.

Tai'chi is performed standing, although some exercises can be adapted for people sitting on a chair.

If you have health problems and are worried as to whether you should do this kind of exercise, it would be best to consult your doctor.


Various times and locations.

Information on walks is normally emailed and publicised at monthly Members Meetings.

Short to medium walks, nearly always on footpaths away from busy roads – by rivers, canals, parks and woods. 

There are usually places of interest to point out en route.

The pace is also very gentle.

There are always break–off points for persons who do not do the whole walk.


A small group at present meeting in a member's house. 

Bring with you warm socks & jumper a small blanket, rug, yoga mat or something similar (working in bare feet) wear loose comfortable clothing
