New Regents College - Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)

Service details

What is a Pupil Referral Unit or PRU?

A PRU is a local authority-funded school set up specifically for pupils who otherwise would not receive a suitable education. Reasons for this could include exclusion, risk of exclusion, or disengagement from their current school.

Hackney’s PRU was graded Good by Ofsted in 2021

PRUs are sometimes referred to as ‘alternative provision’ or AP for short. Hackney’s PRU aims to help learners overcome their barriers to learning. These may be about improving their behaviour or another aspect of their learning.

Most students who attend a PRU are there for a short period and return to mainstream school or make a fresh start at a new school.

New Regent’s College

New Regent’s College is a PRU for Hackney schools. It is a mixed-age provision for children and young people in primary and or secondary education. Primary and secondary-aged learners work separately.

There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy especially for younger students.

All students are offered small classes and intensive levels of support.

Students remain onsite throughout the whole school day unless a supervised trip is planned. Our facilities include a state-of-the-art Sports Hall, ICT Hub, Dance Studio, and Food Technology room for other subjects.

A small number of Years 10 and 11 students may be educated off-site and attend a range of specialist vocational education providers appropriate to their needs, to prepare them for success in mainstream adult life.

New Regents offers students in-house SaLT (Speech and Language Therapists), Sensory curriculum opportunities, Dance, Outdoor Education, and Specialist Employability Programmes.

Who agrees to Alternative Provision placements in Hackney?

Young people who are at risk of exclusion can access support from our AP providers via referral to a local area inclusion panel called HAPP (Hackney’s Alternative Provision Panel).

All stakeholders have responsibilities to ensure places are used and managed effectively to support those most in need.

Find information about Hackney Alternative Provision providers and processes here.
