Stormont House School
Service details
Who are we?
Stormont House is a mixed day community special school for up to 120 pupils aged 11-17 (Years 7-12).
Our curriculum is designed to be appropriate for students whose combination of Communication & Interaction needs and Moderate Learning Difficulties would significantly affect their ability to learn, thrive and develop in a secondary mainstream setting.
Our ultimate objectives for our students are for them to:
- make greater progress with their learning, emotional and social development than they would anywhere else, and for that progress to be indistinguishable from non-disadvantaged peers with similar starting points
- have full lives, make increasingly meaningful choices about their futures, and control of their support
- be fully ready for the next stage of education, employment, or training, gaining qualifications that allow them to go on to destinations that meet their interests, aspirations, and the intention of their course of study
We were one of the very first Ofsted 'Outstanding' schools in the country and the first 'Outstanding' school in Hackney. Since then we have consistently been identified as 'Outstanding’ (2018,2014, 2008, and 2005). Our most recent inspection in July 2018 found us to be a school that is ‘Outstanding in all areas’, including the Sixth Form.
The School's SEN (Special Educational Needs) Information Report
The government has said schools must provide information to parents about the support they give to children with additional needs. These SEN Information Reports are intended to explain the practical day-to-day approach taken in each school. They should be written in a way that is helpful, clear, and meaningful for parents.
Parents and carers can find out more about support for students in Stormont House School's SEN (Special Educational Needs) Information Report here (PDF).
Post 16 provision at Stormont House
Since 2014 we have offered an innovative one-year Post 16 program that includes:
- 2 days per week at a college or other provider following an accredited vocational course
- 3 days at school for English; Maths; Computing; Personal and Social Development; an Enterprise Project; Duke of Edinburgh Award and work experience.
If a student is ready to join an appropriate full-time course elsewhere at age 16, we also celebrate that.
Our Sixth form provision offers our students an opportunity to continue to achieve in their studies and to experience the wider world of work. Stormont House School Sixth Form supports and prepares students for their future progression and transition into employment and independent living through its offer of extended and supported work experience and work-based learning. Students continue to have access to our strong pastoral support and career advice.
Message from the Headteacher
"I have the good fortune to be Headteacher of this Ofsted-rated outstanding school. I’d like to tell you a bit more about us:
- The pupils are terrific: all have well-documented difficulties, but all come with untapped strengths and talents too. They each make massive journeys in their learning and personal development from start to finish even though there may be bumps in the road at times!
- We’ve been consistently judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and are one of the very first outstanding schools in the country. Our vision aims even higher: ‘Achievement for all in a unique world-class school’.
- We intend to be the best in the world at what we do; to achieve this we need staff who are already very good and also intend to be the best at what they do.
- We take our School Development priorities very seriously: Preparing for Adulthood, Visible Learning; Well-being. We know we are not perfect; we make mistakes but try to learn from them.
- We’re not a school that works for every type or complexity of need. You can read more about who the school is for on our website.
- We are one of the lead schools in the Hackney Teaching Schools’ Alliance (HTSA). This means that we work closely with other schools to improve teacher training and share best practice.
- We also have a unique Sixth Form offer.
Please do get in touch by phone or through our website if you have any additional questions."
