About this service

Supporting children and young people with health needs is a statutory duty for all local authorities. The Specialist Teacher for Medical Needs is part of the Inclusion and Specialist Support Team and Hackney Integrated SEND Services for children with additional needs and disabilities. They have expertise in supporting pupils with health needs when they are well enough to return to their education at school. 

What help or support is available from this service? 

The Specialist Teacher can offer practical advice on how schools can support the inclusion of pupils with medical needs pupils, including advice and guidance on writing and agreeing Individual Healthcare Plans.

There is no charge to schools for support or provision to eligible children or young people from the Specialist Teacher for Medical Needs.

The Specialist Teacher is able to support communications at school meetings where a child with medical needs is concerned. To do this relationships are in place with key medical professionals in the borough including:

Who is eligible?

The child or young person: 

  • is a Hackney resident
  • is of statutory school age
  • is able to access suitable education but needs additional support due to health needs 
  • The referral is supported by medical evidence from a health consultant

Referral Details

This is a service for schools and referrals come from the school's Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). 

Parents-carers who have children who may need a referral for their child or young person can discuss this with the SENCo or call directly to speak with the specialist teacher. Direct line number included at the top of this page. 

The specialist teacher will discuss if a self-referral is appropriate and if not signpost to other support services.

What to do if you have a complaint

If you have feedback about this service, something you liked or were not happy with, you can talk to the person who worked with you or, if you feel more comfortable, a service manager. They will use your feedback to check the service is a good as it can be and try to help sort out any problems.

If you are still not happy with the service you can raise your concerns formally. This means someone who is not part of the service will look at your feedback or concern and see if anything can or needs to be done to help make things better.

If you need to make a formal complaint you can use the London Borough of Hackney complaints procedure.
