Starlight Childrens Ward - Homerton Hospital
Service details
Who we are:
The ward provides around the clock access for urgent GP referrals and children-only outpatient clinics. The Starlight children’s ward cares for children up to the age of 16.
Often emergency admissions come through our children’s emergency assessment (CEA) unit in the hospital's A&E department where children may be observed for a short while, or have necessary investigations done before being either discharged home or admitted to Starlight's childrens ward. Starlight has a multidisciplinary team which includes:
- Consultants
- Specialist Registrars/Staff Grade doctors
- A Senior Nurse
- Ward Manager
- Clinical Nurse Specialists
- Registered children’s nurses
- Play specialist
- Health care assistants
- dieticians
- physiotherapists
- administrative and clerical support staff
What we do
If you have to stay in Homerton Hospital for treatment or monitoring, you will be given a welcome pack when you arrive with the essential information about ward routines, meals, visiting times, controlling infections and more.
All care is delivered by staff trained to look after children who use family-centred care, which considers the needs of the wider family.
Starlight inpatients
The children's inpatient ward has:
- 15 beds (one of which can be used to care for children requiring one-to-one nursing)
- a three-bed observation area
- play facilities
- treatments rooms
- adolescent facilities
- a parents' room where refreshments are provided
We encourage parents to stay with their child and can provide a bed. However, because of the lack of space, only one parent can stay overnight.
Brothers and sisters should not stay overnight, but can visit during the day.
Starlight Outpatients
The ward provides around the clock access for urgent GP referrals and children-only outpatient clinics including:
- GP rapid referral (urgent) clinic and GP hotline
- General Paediatric Outpatient Clinics for routine and urgent paediatric assessment
- Nurse led clinics in Dermatology and Paediatric allergies
- Dietetics clinics
- Appointment based outpatient phlebotomy
- Starlight children's ward
The Starlight outpatient unit is on the first floor above the main reception at the entrance of the hospital.
