Literacy Pirates
Service details
Who are we?
The Literacy Pirates is a community-rooted organisation led by teachers who believe that all children should experience success in learning.
Through publishing projects, reading support and the power of local community, we’re on an adventure to build a fairer world.
Sessions run in fantastical spaces in Hackney, Haringey and virtually.

What do we do?
We believe in the exceptional potential of every child and use the power of positivity and fun to unlock that potential. We work with children in Years 5-8 whose teachers think they would benefit from extra literacy support.
Our award-winning learning programme is devised and led by qualified teachers. Sessions are designed to promote enjoyment in literacy, so we give our Young Pirates dedicated time to read with a cohort of trained volunteers, and the chance to voice their ideas in creative writing activities.
At the end of each term, we publish their written work in high-quality books, films, and audio projects, and celebrate their hard work at big events with their teachers and family.
Volunteering
As our Learning Programme is designed to give each child 1:1 support, we rely on volunteers to help in session.
