Special Schools in Hackney
Service details
What is a special school?
Special schools are schools that specialise in providing an education for children or young people who have been identified as having a learning difficulty or disability which calls for additional and highly specialist educational provision to be made for them.
Special Schools educate children whose needs cannot be met within a mainstream setting, and whose parents or carers have agreed to or requested a special school placement.
Children or young people who attend a special school have Education, Health and Care Plans in place.
What special schools are available in Hackney?
Hackney's currently has three local authority maintained special schools:
Where can I find more information about schools?
Each school is required to have a School SEN Information Report that explains in more detail how they work with their pupils.
You may wish to arrange a visit to the school you are interested in. These are available but you need to contact the school to book a time. Some special schools do not have formal open days when students are in as it can be too disruptive and distracting for them.
SENDIAGS Hackney's SEND Information, Advice and Support service are able to offer parents advice about applying to schools.
If your child has an Education, Health, and Care Plan you can discuss possible options with the EHC Plan Coordinator.
