HIP (Hackney Independent Parents) for parents of children with SEND

Service details

Who are we?

Hackney Independent Parent Carer Forum (HiP) is a not for profit group run by parent carers of children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) for parents and carers of children with SEND.

HiP’s parent-carers volunteer their time to help develop and create more support, and opportunity, and be a collective voice for Hackney’s parents and carers.

HiP can act as a mechanism for feedback for key sectors and services used by families who have children with additional needs and or disabilities.

What do we do?

HiP works with local statutory services and community services to share and create opportunities for local families.

A recent collaborative piece of work that HIP undertook is the Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) parent carer survey and resulting report.

Current opportunities are listed below.

Parent-carer voice

HiP volunteers work with the local authority and health SEND service decision makers and service leads to promote the voice of local parents and carers based on their lived experience. This work aims to help improve and develop local services and to provide constructive feedback based on HiPs network of parent-carers feedback about their experiences of local SEND services and local SEND needs.

Peer Support

HiP coordinated peer support sessions for parents and carers and can signpost parents to different services. You can sign up to become a member by contacting HiP via email. You will be able to receive information about upcoming events and opportunities to get involved with the work HiP does.

WhatsApp parent connect and support groups

HiP understands local parents and carers are busy with work and or caring responsibilities and seeks to provide opportunities for sharing relevant information directly with parents in the most convenient ways. To do this HiP facilitates a number of specialist WhatsApp parent-carer peer support groups. These include:

  • ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) and girls
  • ASC and boys
  • Under 5’s
  • Preparing for Adulthood
  • Learning Difficulties
  • Turkish-speaking parent-carer group

To find out more about these groups OR how to create a group not mentioned here contact HiP by phone or email. Remember to send HIP your name and phone contact details so someone can call you back.
