Hackney Shared Lives - supported housing scheme
Service details
Who we are?
Shared Lives is a national scheme that helps match people who need support with a Shared Lives carer. There are around 150 Shared Lives schemes across the UK.
Hackney Shared Lives Scheme matches people living in the borough who need support with an approved carer taking part in the scheme.
Each person is given time to get to know each other and develop an understanding of their interests and needs. They then choose to share their family and community lives together. This may be for day support, respite, or to move in with their shared lives carer.
We provide people over the age of 18 who have assessed support needs, with the opportunity to live an ordinary life with a family/carers for either a short time or longer if needed depending on the needs of the person.
Local schemes support each match between people, and regularly assess and review how suitable and safe the Shared Lives carer’s home is.
Hackney Shared Lives scheme is directly run by the local authority and is based within the Integrated Learning Disabilities Service.
What do we do?
Hackney Shared Lives scheme offers:
- Respite
- Day care
- Shared care
- Short term placements
- Long term placements
We are always willing to consider any suggestions or requirements, as we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy living how they want in their community.
In Hackney we recruit and assess potential carers carefully and according to a monitored process. Carers who are accepted onto the scheme are provided with regular training, home visits and carers meetings for advice and support.
What do our customers say who live in the scheme?
“It’s alright living here. I like her cooking, and my bedroom. I like to watch horror films in my bedroom.
The carer’s son is my friend – but we like different football teams.
(My Shared Lives carer) helps with the laundry and reminds me to go to places...
I think it’s good to live with a family. I’ve got a roof over my head, it’s warm and I’m safe”
Notes
People living in the scheme who are not able to manage their own money will be advised to nominate a relative or financial service to administer their finances.
