City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies

Service details

Who are we?

City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies is an IAPT (Improve Accesses to Psychological Therapies) service commissioned through Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Everyone can feel stressed, worried or down from time to time but if this is happening to you and it goes on too long, or you feel like you can’t cope, The City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies service can help you find ways to manage the thoughts and feelings you have and make changes, so you can live life to the full.

We are a confidential NHS service for adults registered with a GP in City and Hackney.

What do we do?

A wide range of tried and tested NHS talking therapies are on offer from the service. Talking with a trained professional can help you work out how to deal with negative thoughts and feelings and learn new skills to get you back on track.

For many people with common mental health problems, talking therapies are proven to be as effective as medicines. Although the therapy is targeted and short term it can create long-lasting positive changes so you not only feel better but stay better, putting you in control to get the most from life.

The City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies service also works with people whose physical health problems affect their mood and motivation, helping them to cope with treatment and medication plans.

How do we work?

Most people receive an initial telephone assessment within two weeks. After your initial assessment, we will agree on a treatment plan with you and book your next appointment.

Talking therapies don’t have to be through regular face-to-face meetings. We also provide help over the phone, online, or in groups.

Specialist therapists, advisers, and other professionals help you get the support that’s right for you. They will talk with you to find out what matters and what you want to achieve and help you work towards your own goals.

Specialist Employment Advisors

If anxiety or depression is affecting you at work or making it hard for you to find work, then The City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies service has an Employment Advice Team who can help you while you are receiving treatment.

Whether you have a job or are trying to find one, work can have a big impact on how you feel. If you’re receiving treatment with us, specialist Employment Advisers can also offer advice and practical support on applying for jobs, preparing for interviews, and dealing with workplace problems.

One of our Employment Advisors is based at the Mare Street JobCentre every two weeks. Job Centre Work Coaches can refer their customers to us through this route if clients would prefer that to self-referral.

Support for adults who are autistic or neurodiverse

We recognise that we need to make tried and tested evidence-based therapies accessible to people who identify as autistic and or neurodivergent.  For example,

  • if you don’t like making eye contact, we don’t need you to
  • if you want to ask for help but find too much information overwhelming, then we’ll try to adapt our sessions to fit your needs.

At the City and Hackney NHS Talking Therapies service we aim to give all individuals:

  • the opportunity to be understood,
  • to be able to talk about their thoughts honestly and reflect on their difficulties without the fear of feeling judged.

All of our staff are trained to deal with a range of problems respectfully and sensitively. Contact us to find out more about what we do or look on our website here.
