Children's Nutrition and Dietetics Service
Service details
Who are we?
We are a team of children’s dietitians based at Homerton Hospital and Hackney Ark. The service works in:
- NICU (neonatal intensive care unit)
- Starlight children's unit and outpatient clinics
- Hackney Ark
- Specific special needs schools in City and Hackney
The Children's Nutrition and Dietetics Service has specially trained dietitians who can offer advice and treatment to children having difficulties eating the right food. We also provide dietetic input to the Homerton children's allergy service.
What do we do?
Dietitians interpret the science of nutrition to improve health and treat diseases or conditions by educating and giving practical, personalised advice to parents, carers and young people they are seeing.
We work with children and young people across City and Hackney, providing services from Hackney Ark and Homerton Hospital sites.
What happens at appointments?
At most consultation appointments the child will have their weight and height checked, length if they are a baby. The dietitian will:
- assess the patient’s dietary intake
- calculate their nutritional needs
The dietitian can then give individualised advice based on the child’s age, medical condition and requirements. This may be a discussion with the parent-carer , printed information and often both.
If a child is found to need special formula, feed or specialist allergy products, the dietitian will write to the child’s Doctor/GP to make this request.
