The Petchey Academy

Service details

Who are we?

Petchey Academy is a secondary education academy for girls and boys aged 11-18 years. Academies are publicly funded independent schools.

The Petchey Academy is a standalone sponsor academy. It takes its name from Sir Jack Petchey, one of the UK's most successful businessmen and philanthropists who, in 2006, sponsored the Academy. The unique ethos of the Academy was inspired by Sir Jack’s maxim “If I think I can, I can”.

What do we do?

We are committed to inspiring and supporting every child to be the very best that they can be. Strong pastoral support systems complemented by a broad and holistic curriculum and high-quality teaching that stretch and challenge our students.

A focus on each child as an individual helps students develop confidence in thinking for themselves.

Petchey Academy believes in the importance of fostering a love of learning. Through exposure to a wide range of activities and opportunities beyond the classroom, Petchey stimulates curiosity.

The Petchey Academy is committed to the inclusion of all students.
We are incredibly proud of our provision for deaf and hearing-impaired children.

Petchey students learn about deafness and are familiar with hearing aids, radio aids, and other equipment being used around the academy. Deaf awareness is part of the culture of the school.

How to apply for a place at Petchy?

All students are advised to attend the open-day events. Parents and students with SEND may wish to discuss their needs with a member of staff.

Students with additional needs who do not have an EHC Plan follow the standard admissions process.

The timescale and process for starting secondary school for children with an EHC Plan is different from the process for children without a plan.

What support is offered to students who have additional needs or disabilities?

The government has asked schools and academies to publish information about support for children with special educational needs. SEN Information Reports explain the practical day-to-day approach taken in individual schools. They should be written for parents in a way that is meaningful, helpful, and clear. This advice article explains more about the School SEN Report duty

Petchy's School SEN Information Report is linked to below.

What is the Petchey Deaf Support Base?

At the Petchey Deaf Support Base (DSB) all deaf and partially hearing students will have equal opportunities to learn, socialise and influence their learning environment.

The DSB provides:

  • a qualified teacher of the deaf
  • specialist Learning Support Assistants and
  • a highly specialised Speech and Language Therapist (SALT)

Students learn alongside their hearing peers and also receive additional pre and post-teaching of the vocabulary for mainstream subjects as needed.

All deaf students are assessed by our SALT and, if necessary, provided with individual and group sessions to promote language development and social communication.

All Petchey students learn about deafness and are familiar with seeing hearing aids, radio aids, and other equipment being used around the academy. Deaf awareness is part of the culture of the school.

The Resource Base caters to deaf and partially hearing students with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and additionally supports students without an EHCP but who use personal audiological equipment and wish to access the benefits of The Petchey Academy.
