The Excelsior Academy (formerly known as The Petchey Academy)

Service details

Who are we?

The Excelsior Academy is a secondary education academy for girls and boys aged 11-18 years. Academies are publicly funded independent schools.

What is the difference between an academy and a school?

Academies are publicly funded independent schools. They don't have to follow the national curriculum and can choose to set their own term times. They still have to follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs, and exclusions as other state schools. Academies get money directly from the government, not the local authority. They are run by an academy trust that employs the staff.

Some academies have sponsors such as businesses, universities, other schools, faith groups or voluntary groups. The sponsors are responsible for improving the performance of their schools.

The Excelsior Academy (formerly The Petchey Academy) is part of Community Schools Trust (a Multi Academy Trust) which also means that we are our own admissions authority. However, we adopt Hackney Council's Admission Arrangements to ensure continuity across the borough.

Information for students with SEND

The School SEN (Special Educational Needs) Information Report

The government has asked all schools and academies to provide parents with information about their support for young people with SEN. This is called a School's SEN Information report.

The School SEN Information Report explains the practical day-to-day approach taken by individual schools. They should be written to be helpful, clear, and meaningful for parents. The following Hackney Local Offer help and advice articles explain more about this duty. What is a school SEN information report?

A link to The Excelsior Academy School SEN Information Report is available further down this page.

SEND and School Admissions

Information about the process for applying for secondary school, if you have additional needs but do not have an EHC Plan, is the same as the general admissions process. This information is available on Hackney Education's website here.

Students with SEND who have an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHC Plan)

The timescale and process for starting secondary school for students with an EHC Plan is different. A preference form will be sent to you to list the schools you would prefer your child to attend.

Find information about secondary choosing and starting at secondary schools (Secondary Phase Transfer)) on Hackney's Local Offer website here.

What is the additionally resourced Deaf Support Base?

The Deaf Support Base (DSB) all deaf and partially hearing students will have equal opportunities to learn, socialise and influence their learning environment.

The DSB provides:

  • a qualified teacher of the deaf
  • specialist Learning Support Assistants and
  • a highly specialised Speech and Language Therapist (SALT)

Students learn alongside their hearing peers and also receive additional pre and post-teaching of the vocabulary for mainstream subjects as needed.

All deaf students are assessed by our SALT (Speech and Language Therapist) and, if necessary, provided with individual and group sessions to promote language development and social communication.

All students learn about deafness and are familiar with seeing hearing aids, radio aids, and other equipment being used around the academy. Deaf awareness is part of the culture of the school.

The Resource Base caters to deaf and partially hearing students with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and additionally supports students without an EHCP but who use personal audiological equipment and wish to access the benefits of The Excelsior Academy.

How do we do this?
